We No Speak Amerciano is a song that played during the entire trip to Cuba. It played more then a couple times a day. It was more like 10 or 20 times a day. It has now become the theme song for the group of people I went with. It's a huge smash hit! Take a listen and it'll get you in the mood for the rest of my blog entry.
I was Cuba bound from Oct 10/2010 till Oct 17/2010. We arrived in Cuba quite late on Sunday. In order to get to our hotel we had to go to Veradero to get there. I've never seen a place like this before. I've never really traveled before (other then to Disney World) and all of it seemed so serial me. It's run down, old buildings, dirty but beautiful at the same time. There was this smell, a smell that was everywhere I went and even thinking about it I can still smell it. I can't quite explain what it was but definitely wasn't a bad smell. Sorta a mix between Cuban rum, Cuban cigars, the ocean and the old cars.
Throughout the week we got to go on special excursions. Because we were such a large group of people and the bride and groom were regulars to this hotel they had connections on getting on a great tour guide and only going to the places that we really wanted to it. Basically we did whatever we wanted to. The first excursion was on the Wednesday. It started off with snorkelling (which is absolutely the most amazing experience ever) and got to see all the wonderful coral and fish and even jellyfish. Unfortunately I got the pleasure of being stung by a little one. It came out of no where and stung me on my stomach. Thankfully though, no one had to pee on me lol. Next we went to this Cave. It was a cave with water where we could swim. It was fresh water and extremely refreshing considering we were all pretty sick of the salt water in the ocean. Soon after that we went to this beautiful river where we hooped on a river boat and started cruising down it. It was so relaxing and fun. We got the chance to order ourselves some lobster and beer which was very good. The river was dark brown because it was half fresh water and salt water. It didn't look very nice but we did get the chance to swim in it. Once we got to our destination we went up to this house in the middle of no where where the owner cooked us lunch and we all eat outside on little picnic benches that looked like it was there for years and years. The only place we could go to the washroom was this tiny little outhouse. Of course we used it. I did and then my Dad and then one of our group members. After he came out he said "I think i'd just seen a spider" We go back in to check it out and turns out it was an incredibly huge tarantula! Of course because canadians we all freaked out. Right after that encounter we just wanted to get out of there. We ate quickly and worked our way back to the river and headed across. There we got to hold Alligators, a tree rat and a snake. Of course .. I freaked and I only held the Alligator. I also got my first chance to go horse back riding. It was sad though because you could tell just how much these horse were starving. Cubans treat animals very poorly, if your animal lover this can be quite hurtful to see. Shortly after that we headed back up the river and headed back to the hotel. It was a great day!
Tomorrow I will continue writing about my trip but for now i'm sure this is enough to read. :)
